Stroke
stroke: Acute neurological deficit: Clinical
“CVA” Cerebro-Vascular Accident: cause: Pathology.

Fun facts
- Neurons “Aerobic”: Continuous O2 need. ~10 min of ischemia - irreversible injury.
- Brain ~2% of body wt. | ~20% of cardiac output | ~20% body O2
- deep branches of MCA most common (basal ganglia: thalamus, internal capsule, globus pallidus) → hemiplagia
- Umbra: Area of permanent cell death from infarct
- penumbra: area of temporary inflammation surrounding infract → possibility of recovery
Global ischemia
Stroke types:
Clinical
- Transient Ischemic Attack: Resolve <24h, No cell death.
- Evolving: Increasing (Thrombotic) Atheroma → thrombosis.
- Completed: (Embolic) no change.
