virus infects hepatocyte, replicate, produce viral antigen coating hepatocyte surface and released into blood. T lymphocyte attraction and response results in immune attack and apoptosis of hepatocytes. macrophages engulf and clear necrotic cells.
causes inflammation: fever, jaundice, loss of function
