Location: Palatine tonsils in lateral oropharynx
Aetiology:
- Viral (kids <5) (rhinovirus, RSV, adenovirus, corona etc.)
- Bacterial (>5yo): (GAS, staph A. Strep pneumo, Haem. Influenzae)
Demographics
- Viral: kids <5)
- Bacterial: (>5yo)
Risk Factors
- Sick contacts, overcrowding, the usual “susceptible to infection” risks
Clinical Features
- fever
- tonsillar; swelling, erythema and exudates, sore throat
- tender anterior cervical chain lymphadenopathy
- odynophagia and dysphagia secondary to tonsillar swelling.
