Location: Palatine tonsils in lateral oropharynx

Aetiology:

• Viral (kids <5) (rhinovirus, RSV, adenovirus, corona etc.)
• Bacterial (>5yo): (GAS, staph A. Strep pneumo, Haem. Influenzae)

Demographics

• Viral: kids <5)
• Bacterial: (>5yo)

Risk Factors

• Sick contacts, overcrowding, the usual “susceptible to infection” risks

Clinical Features

• fever
• tonsillar; swelling, erythema and exudates, sore throat
• tender anterior cervical chain lymphadenopathy
• odynophagia and dysphagia secondary to tonsillar swelling.
