Diagnoses

• Hiatus hernia
• Gastritis
• Peptic ulcer disease
• Gastric cancer

Xray + Barium Swallow (use gastrografin instead if suspect perforation)

• Helpful for hiatus hernia

Hiatus hernia: on barium swallow, cardia of stomach outpouching through abdominal wall

Erect chest Xray

• perforation: free air beneath diaphragm
• cant tell where perforation is
• must be upright for 10mins for gas to rise
• can detect as little as 1ml
• can also be seen on ultrasound but CXR easier/more accessible
