Chronic condition affecting joints and periarticular structures. Characterised by joint pain and reduced ROM. Can affect whole joint, including cartilage, bone, synovial lining, synovial fluid.

- 50% >65yos have radiological evidence, 10% men, 18% women have symptomatic

Aetiology
- Primary OA: 95**%.** old people without predisposing trauma or disease. Genetic and biomechanical factors
- Secondary OA: 5%. young people with a preexisting joint abnormality. Predisposing conditions include trauma or injury, congenital joint disorders, inflammatory arthritis, avascular necrosis, infectious arthritis, Paget disease, osteopetrosis, osteochondritis dissecans, metabolic disorders (hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease), hemoglobinopathy, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or Marfan syndrome.
Risk Factors
- age, female gender, family history, anatomical factors
- obesity, muscle weakness, and joint injury (occupation/sports activities).
