Ultrasound upper abdomen

• chronic liver disease (cause)
  • alcohol related liver disease, NALFD
    • increased echogenicity (hyperechoic)
    • mild hepatomegaly
• Cirrhosis
• hepatocellular carcinoma screening

Normal liver and cortex of kidney have same echogenicity.

Steatosis leads to hyperechoic liver, and becomes “whiter” than kidney

Transient elastography (Fibroscan)

• chronic liver disease and staging fibrosis
• increased fibrosis → increased stiffness → altered sound propagation
