Bony Injury – Xray or CT
Soft tissue Injury - ultrasound
Internal Derangement (chondral surface, ligament, meniscus) – MRI; 2nd line CT arthrography
There are many different potential sites for avulsion fractures due to multiple ligament and tendon insertions around the knee
Soft tissue findings may indicate the presence of a fracture that may be otherwise missed
Patellar injuries are more often seen on lateral views
