Do gait with brisk turn

General inspection:

• Signs of pain or fever
• Use of walking aides
• Observe gait as the patient walks into the consult room

Knee examination:

Inspection (Look):

Inspect for swelling, deformity and asymmetry

• Alignment of joint (valgus and varus deformities may be more easily appreciated standing)

• Wasting of the quadriceps

• Skin changes: surgical scars (e.g. arthroscopy or joint replacement), bruising, erythema, swelling

• Observe patella tracking during active flexion and extension
