viral hepatitis, gallstones, alcoholic hepatitis/cirrhosis most common
- Prehepatic: excessive RBC breakdown, overwhelming liver ability to conjugate bilirubin → unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia
- Hepatic Jaundice: Dysfunction of hepatocytes. Cirrhosis → compressed intrahepatic biliary tree → jaundice: Unconjugated and conjugated bilirubin in the blood (mixed picture)
- post hepatic: Obstruction of biliary drainage after conjugation in liver. Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
