Pathophysiology

Sexual (75%), blood/blood products (transfusion, IVDU), vertical (mum to baby), oral transmission of virus -> HIV infection -> Insert into host genome and replicate, (asymptomatic/flu like for weeks in acute phase). Virus titre increases -> budding and virion release. CD8 cells target and deplete CD4 cells over years. Eventual CD4 depletion leads to AIDS, opportunistic infection and death
