
- Inflammation of the episclera
- Episcleritis is typically focal (as pictured above it only effects one side of the eye)
- usually self-limiting and spontaneous regression occurs after 1-2 weeks. But recurrent bouts may occur every 1-3 months.
Demographics:
- Mean age: ~45
- Women > Men
- Unilateral in 70% of cases
Etiology:
- Most commonly idiopathic
- Can be associated with underlying systemic disease (most commonly rheumatoid arthritis)
- Less commonly caused by bacterial/viral infections and drug reactions (bisphosphonates)
Clinical Features:
- Acute onset
- Mild eye pain/irritation and watering
- Red eye
- Vision unaffected
