demographics

• Most common gynaecological cancer
• Post-menopausal women (peak incidence in the 60s,  uncommon in women under 45)

Classification

• Type 1: associated with increased estrogen exposure (estrogen-dependent)

  • 3 grades based on abnormalities of the cells on histology.

    

• Type 2: not estrogen dependant. More aggressive than type 1.

  • Classified as clear cell or serous
  • Considered a grade 3 tumour

Aetiology:

Type I endometrial cancer

• Estrogen dependant
• Some genetic mutations (PTEN gene or mismatch repair genes) also associated with this type of cancer.

Type II endometrial cancer

• Associated with endometrial atrophy (especially in postmenopausal women)
• p53 mutation in 95% of cases
