

Bony injury (Tibia Fibula, Talus) suspected:
- Initial imaging -Xray
- Other imaging – CT for bone; MRI for ligament
Soft tissue injury suspected:
- MRI
- If not available – consider ultrasound
Ankle Xray tips
- Always have more than 1 view
- Check the Talar dome – there could be an osteochondral fracture
- If there is widening at distal talofibular syndesmosis this may indicate a fracture, these ligaments also take longer to heal than other ligaments – further imaging is needed
Lateral malleolus fractures:
- Associated with twisting, inversion injuries of the ankle
- Classified according to the location of the fracture in regards to the ankle joint line *Weber Classification
