demographics

• Past history of previous attacks or a past history of alcoholism. (35%) or gallstone disease (40 50%).
• commonly precipitated by fatty foods and alcohol.

Aetiology

• Alcohol (binge drinking) (males) & Gall stones (females) - 80%
• Triglycerides esp in pregnancy
• Shock, Immune, mumps, hypercalcemia, drugs,
• Hereditary: childhood, chronic pancreatitis – increased trypsin activity.
• Surgery, ERCP, procedures
• Trauma (pancreatic neck sits over L1. Blunt trauma to back → damage and enzyme leak)

Risk factors

• binge drinking and chronic alcohol use
• gall stone RFs
