Aetiology: Self-limiting LRTI, usually viral (rhino, adeno, influenza A + B). Atypical: mycoplasma pneumoniae, chlamydia pneumoniae.

Clinical features:

• Purulent or coloured sputum (NOT predictive of bact infxn here), dyspnoea, wheeze, chest discomfort, nasal congestion, headache, fever.
• Cough lasts 2-3wks & resolves by 4wks, may extend to 8wks. Return if longer. Reassure pt = mgmnt.
• DDx: pneumonia, influenza, pertussis, asthma, HF.
